PE and sports

It is my remit this year to ensure that the quality of PE provision at St Oswald’s is outstanding. The government believe strongly in making children healthier (as do we) and have put extra money into schools specifically for this purpose. After all, one third of primary aged children are overweight.

To ensure we are outstanding, we need to provide not only excellent PE lessons but also:

  • Increased participation in extra-curricular sport, at school or at local sports clubs/venues – encouraging the development of ‘sport for life’, the attitude that sport/exercise is needed in all our lives to keep us healthy.
  • Increased participation in Sainsbury's School Games intra-school and inter-school competitions – our aim is that every child will represent the school at something.

If your child particularly enjoys a sport at school or they like the idea of a sport we don’t do at school, encourage them to try a local club – there are links to local clubs below which will be added to throughout the year. Please let me know if your child attends a club that is not listed. Alternatively, just encourage your child to be more active: go for a run together; take them swimming; play in the park… The aim is that all children do at least one hour per week of exercise outside school time, in addition to the two hours they do at school. There are some children who already do 7 hours - one hour per day - which is the government’s recommended amount. Keep me updated with what they are doing so we can celebrate their efforts in school. We strongly recommend that all children learn to swim as young as possible. School swimming lessons will contribute to children acquiring this valuable skill.

The Sainsbury's School Games inter-school competition calendar is on our website under each classes events section – please check dates that your child may be involved in competitions. This list will be added to as opportunities arise throughout the year. Sainsbury's School Games intra-school competitions (between houses) will take place during school time - look out for certificates coming home. Photos and reports of all competitions are on our sports reports page.

Thank you for your support in developing your child's physical ability and love for an active lifestyle.
