A St Oswald's International Speaker

Bonjour et bienvenue!

In Key Stage Two Modern Foreign Languages we are developing our understanding of french. At St Oswald's we believe in the developing the whole child and this includes giving them access and opportunities to learn other languages and discover more about other cultures.

Weekly, children have the opportunity to practise speaking, listening, reading and writing through a range of interactive activities. The aim is to build up their confidence in french and to learn a language in a fun and engaging way.

Our values and beliefs about primary languages

We believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils, enabling them to:

  • Develop key communication skills
  • Extend their knowledge of how language works
  • Acquire the skills and confidence to learn any language at any time in their life
  • Acquire new perspectives on the world
  • Develop their understanding of their own cultures and those of others.

The aims of Primary Languages teaching are to:

  • foster an interest in language learning by introducing children to other languages in a way that is enjoyable and accessible to all pupils;
  • stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language and creativity in experimenting with it;
  • support oracy and literacy, and in particular develop speaking and listening skills;
  • help children develop their awareness of cultural similarities and differences;
  • lay the foundations for future language study;

Format

We are following the Primary Languages Network French scheme of work which provides a four year programme including opportunities for assessment. We have made sure that these match up with the National Curriculum objectives and provide opportunities for children to develop their understanding of culture and french traditions.

The units include: 'Saying hello' 'Family' 'Food and Drink' 'The World' 'School'

Over the four years of learning, children will have many opportunities to build up their confidence and build on prior knowledge.
