Separating solids

Class: Lower Key Stage 2: 'The Hedgehogs' Year: 2013 - 2014

This week we have been focusing on solids and liquids.

Some of the questions we have investigated include:

• what happens when liquids cool?
• what happens when solids mix with liquids?
• can a material exist as both a solid and liquid?

Yesterday we faced a challenge where we had to separate solids without touching them or tipping them onto the table.  The only equipment we were allowed to use included containers, sieves, magnets, spoons funnels, water and filter paper.  Although we thought it was impossible at times we remembered what we had learnt over the week and overcame the problems!
